Help

This section should help you to understand and navigate this web site. If you need more assistance or if there is something that you think should be included in this help section, please let us know.

How to navigate the web site

  • The web site can be navigated in several ways. In general, information can be found by clicking on the links in the navigation menu which appears on the left-hand side of each page. More information on how the site is laid out can be found below.

  • On all of the pages, apart from the Discussion forum, the Home link in the navigation menu on the left-hand side of the page will take you back to the Home page from anywhere. On the Discussion forum pages, the "History Home" link just below the titles at the top of the page also takes you back to the Home page.

  • You can navigate around the site by clicking on the highlighted links that appear throughout the site. These are called 'hyperlinks' and they take you to a page that is described by the link. If you want to return to the previous page you viewed, just click on the 'back' button in your browser. You can always tell that a piece of text or a graphic is a hyperlink because your mouse pointer will change from being an arrow to a pointing hand.

  • If you cannot find what you want, you should try:

    • Site Map
This is a list of all the pages in the site. Each entry is a link which will take you to the page in question. To get to the Site Map, click on Site Map in the blue bar near the top of the page.

    • Search Site
The whole site can be searched using a text search facility. This can be found at the top left of each page above the navigation menu. Just type in a few words or phrases. Try to use discriminating terms that are likely to be found only in the documents you seek. The more words you give, the better results you'll get. To search for words containing 'special' characters e.g. ö ü, read the section about special characters on the FAQs page

  • You can also use any of the links: Help, Contact Us, Site Map and FAQs. These links are available in the Button Bar on all pages.

History resources

  • This is where you will find most of the documents that have been written for this project. If a document in the History resources section is quite long, we split it into a number of web pages. In these cases, a page indicator will appear at the top right and bottom right of the page. You can click on the arrows to go to the next or previous page in the document, or you can click on a page number to go directly to a particular page in the document.

Languages

  • On some of the pages, below the blue bar near the top of the screen, you may see a number of two-letter abbreviations (for example: en, es, it, pt, ro, sv). This is the language bar that will enable you to view the page in another of the partner languages. As you rest the mouse over one of the abbreviations, you will see the full name of the language appear. Clicking on the abbreviation will translate the page into that language.

Discussion forum

  • The Discussion forum pages have a slightly different look from the rest of the site. For help in using the Discussion forum, click on the FAQ link (Frequently asked questions) on the Discussion forum pages. Although anyone can read the postings to the forums, you will need to register before you can post your own messages to the forums. To register click on the Register link near the top of the Discussion forum pages.

Printing pages

  • At the top left corner of each web page is a Printable version link which provides a printer-friendly version of the web page. Click on this link to open a window containing a version of the web page that does not have any of the screen decoration i.e. navigation menus, images, buttons etc, and that combines all the sections into a single page so that you can print all the related information in one step. To print this printer-friendly page, select File then Print.

Saving pages

  • Any page can be saved from this site to your local drive. Select File then Save As from your browser's menu bar.

Internet browsers

  • What do you need to view this web site?

Either Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator, version number 4 or later, is recommended for viewing this web site. Earlier versions may not display the text and graphics properly. Although other browsers can be used, you may experience some difficulties.

Some settings can have a minor effect on appearance. For example, in Windows if the font size is set to 'Large Fonts', this will cause some text to take up more space than was intended. If you change your accessibility settings (in Internet options) to 'ignore colours specified on web pages', and change to your preferred background and text colours, you may not see the correct colours used to identify areas of the screen. However this will not affect any other aspect of the web site content.

Screen Resolution

  • What screen resolution should you use?

The screen resolution affects the size and clarity of graphics on your screen. It is measured in pixels (strictly the number of pixels in a horizontal direction x the number of pixels in the vertical direction). The recommended screen resolution for this web site is 800x600. If you have a resolution of 640x480 you will need to use the scroll bars to see the full screen. To improve the page view you should use the 800x600 screen resolution or higher. How you adjust your screen resolution will depend on your operating system. (However, for Microsoft Windows 95/98/ME/XP, right-click on the desktop, select properties, click the Settings tab and alter the screen resolution).
