Heroes of Stevenson College Edinburgh students: Project year 3 (2008-2009)

Science Degree Access Course students

Introduction by Biology lecturer John O'Neill:

Students on the Science Degree Access Course (Click to enlarge)The Science Degree Access course is for students who are over sixteen but with no upper age limit. Students on this one year course are required to submit a written investigative report as part of their assessed course work. This provides an ideal opportunity to integrate the work of the Heroes Project into the science curriculum. The title they have been set is "Heroes of science and technology, past and present - a study of how the work of pioneering scientists has benefitted society"

Here are the students' summaries, presentations and reports of the scientists they chose :

Occupational Health and Safety students

Introduction by Trade Union Studies lecturer Penny Gower:

Stress within my CompanyOur Trade Union courses are for people of all ages who are in employment. Students come from a variety of workplaces – offices, factories, prisons, colleges and many others. The length of the courses range from a few days to a whole year. Students study how to represent workers and improve their health and safety. Our approach to 'heroes' is rather different, perhaps, to others in the project. For us, the real heroes are the representatives themselves. These are ‘working class heroes’ (the title of John Lennon’s song). Statistics show that where a trained safety representative is in a workplace, accidents and work-related ill health decline by 50%.
